My Raleigh Touring Bike – Can I tour with this *S$180.00 bike?

My then Raleigh on 26 April 2011
My Raleigh Touring Bike – Can I tour with this S$180.00 bike? *Cost of the bike bought pre-owned
Yes, you heard me correctly the first time. I am doing bicycle touring on a S$180 Raleigh bicycle. To be exact, Raleigh Detour 26 Commuter bicycle. I bought it for my daily use, commuting to schools, meet friends etc. and planned to ride Surly. Obviously plan changed and this is my ride for now and hopefully for as long as I can ride it.

Can I really tour on this bike?
I did a few short sorties with full loads on it. It went a few parts upgrading and fine tuning to my fitting. No major work done on it. The thing I like about this bike is that there is nothing fancy about it. I like it that way.
The changes I made are as follow:
  • Crank
  • Rims and tyres - Courtesy of Shireen
  • Handlebar - Courtesy of Song Seng Chan
  • Mudguard - I bought along Lavender old bike shop
  • Front rack - Seh Suan
  • Handlebar bag - Jason, Performance Cycles
  • Rear Panniers - William Toh (bought at discounted rate)
  • Bike servicing - Uncle Teck, Song Seng Chan
    * There are more. Will edit this post along the way.

My Raleigh now taken on 26 September 211
Can I really tour on this bike? I won’t know. I needed a few tuning and changing of little parts. I will definitely update this posting when I completed the Adventure Cycling for Humanity 2011 – Indonesia.

* At the time of this post editing 28/09. My Raleigh is now at the workshop (Song Seng Chan) for final servicing / tuning. This will includes minor parts change.
